Gamesa consolidates its presence in Brazil with a contract to supply 210 MW of wind turbines to Casa dos Ventos

Gamesa, a global technology leader in wind energy, continues to consolidate its presence in Brazil, where it is one of the leading wind turbine manufacturers, having signed contracts for the supply of over 1,000 MW of its turbines to various projects being built in the country’s windiest regions.

Gamesa has signed a 210-MW supply contract with Casa dos Ventos Energias Renováveis, one of Brazil’s leading wind energy developers, responsible for capacity of close to 18,000 MW.

Under the terms of the agreement, Gamesa will supply, transport, install and commission 105 G97-2.0 MW turbines at the Chapada wind farm being developed in Chapada do Araripe in the state of Piauí. It has also signed an agreement in principal to manage the farm’s maintenance for five years.

Delivery of the turbines, which will be made at Gamesa’s factory in Camaçari, is scheduled for some time after the first quarter of 2015, with the facility slated for completion in the second half of that year.

Since Gamesa started up industrial production in Brazil nearly two years ago, the company has secured supply agreements for over 1,000 MW. At year-end 2012, Gamesa had already installed 96 MW of capacity in Brazil.

“This new contract consolidates Gamesa as one of the leading turbine makers in Brazil, a position underpinned by the combination of our global technological prowess with local know-how, coupled with our commitment to community development, creating jobs and generating wealth”, said Edgard Corrochano, Gamesa’s Southern Cone Managing Director. “Since we set up our new productive centre in Camaçari, Gamesa has demonstrated its strategic commitment to Brazil, one of its priority markets in the short and medium term, by focusing its resources and efforts on development of our supply chain and sharing our know-how with local suppliers. As a result, Gamesa was one of the first foreign companies to comply with the new local content requirements imposed by the BNDES”, he added.

“This project confirms Casa Dos Ventos as one of the leading players in the wind energy field and cements a strong and committed relationship with Gamesa. The interaction between the two companies contributed to an optimized use of the wind resource in Chapada, maximizing the energy-output of these wind farms. By maintaining the partnership with Gamesa in future projects, we are confident that we will add value to our pipeline of over 18,000 MW”, according to Clecio Eloy, Director of Casa dos Ventos.

Besides Brazil, Gamesa is present in other Latin American nations, including Mexico, Honduras, Argentina and Costa Rica, where it has installed almost 1,000 MW of turbines. Latin America is one of the company’s core markets: in the first half of 2013, the region accounted for 48% of total MW sold.
