Wind energy in Belgium: Gamesa wind turbines for wind power project of EDF and Eneco

Gamesa will supply seven of its G114-2.5 MW wind turbines to developers EDF and Eneco for a wind farm in Liege which it will then maintain for 15 years.

Gamesa will install another 14 G58-850 kW wind turbines for EDF Energies Nouvelles for a wind farm being built in the south of France.

Gamesa, a global technology leader in wind energy, has reached a new milestone in its business strategy for northern Europe, having landed its first order in Belgium, specifically for the delivery of seven of its new G114-2.5 MW turbines at the Berloz wind farm located in the east of the country.

This facility, which is being jointly developed by EDF Luminus, a subsidiary of France’s power utility EDF, and Eneco Wind Belgium, a subsidiary of Dutch utility Eneco, will have total installed capacity of 17.5 MW. It is being built between the Walloon towns of Berloz and Geer in the province of Liege.

Under the terms of the agreement Gamesa will supply, install and commission seven G114-2.5 MW wind turbines as well as servicing the facility for 15 years. The turbines are scheduled for delivery in August of this year. The wind farm is expected to start generating by the end of 2015.

This is the company’s second order for its new G114-2.5 MW model, having recently announced a contract to supply 15 MW to international investor group and infrastructure manager, John Laing. The G114-2.5 MW turbine is underpinned by technology proven and validated by the Gamesa 2.0-2.5 MW platform, which has been successfully installed in 33 markets (total installed capacity: over 18,000 MW). This turbine, designed for class II wind speed sites, comes with a longer rotor and increased nominal capacity of 2.5 MW, enabling it to produce 29% more power than the G97-2.0 MW, while lowering the cost of energy by 10%.

Meanwhile, Gamesa has received another order from EDF Energies Nouvelles for the supply, installation and commissioning of 14 G58-850 kW turbines at the Joncels wind farm, located in the southern French region of Languedoc-Roussillon. These turbines will be delivered during the third quarter of 2015 and the wind farm will start generating in December 2015.
