Italian investment projects to implement a wind farm in Matutuíne (Mozambique) for production of 20 MW

Mozambique’s Energy Minister, Salvador Namburete said that “conditions have been created for Italian businesspeople to be involved in the development of the energy sector in Mozambique.”

“The agreement includes establishing partnerships for the development of all areas of energy, taking into account Mozambique’s enormous potential in this field,” Namburete noted.

New sources of power, such as solar energy, wind energy and hydroelectricity, will be the main focus of the activities of Italian companies in Mozambique.

Italian investment projects to implement a wind farm in Matutuíne district for production of 20 MW of energy are at an advanced stage.

Another large project is focused on biofuel production from jatropha in area to be implemented in the district of Moamba, Maputo province.

As well as the announced projects, Italy is also involved, via ENH, in the prospecting and research for oil in the sea off Mozambique.

Guebuza Inaugurates New Wind Turbine

Mozambican President, Armando Guebuza, inaugurated in the region of Rocha Beach, Inhambane province, in the southern of Mozambique the first wind turbine of fourth generation.

The project cost 2.5 million U.S. dollars, including feasibility studies, equipment and assembly. The turbine will generate 300 kilowatts (KW) of electricity, which will supply the local tourism industry, and some other 1,200 consumers.

According to Guebuza, "until recently the wind power seemed to be useless, but today we can generate clean energy without polluting our environment".

The energy Minister Salvador Namburete explained that another 66 wind turbines could be built, with a total installed capacity of generating 20 megawatts of electricity.

Currently, the Government is negotiating with the two mobile phone operators in Mozambique for the installation of wind speed meters on the top of their antennas to assess the wind power potential, mainly along the Mozambican coast and highlands of the interior regions.

The new turbine measuring 32 meters high, is monitored by computer, and can be operated from anywhere in the world. It allows measuring the amount of power generated at a given time, the direction of the wind, among others.
