Spain tops renewable energy forecast

The document contains production forecasts on delivering the country’s national targets for the EU’s overall target of reaching a 20% provision of energy from renewable sources by 2020.

“An initial estimate… is that the share of energy from renewable sources in Spain’s gross final consumption of energy will rise from 10.5% in 2008 to 22.7% in 2020, compared with a target of 20% for Spain in 2020”, the document said.

In 2012 the renewable share will rise to 15.5% and 18.8% in 2016 the forecast, which is a precursor to the National Action Plans on boosting renewable energy which must be submitted to the Commission by 30 June 2010, added.

"It is encouraging to see that some Member States are aiming to exceed their 2020 target. In the case of Spain, wind power plays a large part in the country’s optimist forecast," Jacopo Moccia, Regulatory Affairs Advisor at EWEA, said.

Spain is already a leader in wind energy and by 2020 the European Wind Energy Association (EWEA) predicts that the country’s wind energy capacity will rise from just over 19,000 MW in 2009, to up to 42,500 MW by 2020.

Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Galicia, Andalucia and Aragon are Spain’s top wind energy producing regions, and wind energy is the country’s third biggest energy source after combined cycle gas and nuclear.
