Endesa and Telefónica launch first electric vehicles telephone recharging station

The ceremony was inaugurated by the mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, the Chairman of Endesa, Borja Prado, and the Chairman of Telefónica, César Alierta. Users will be able to recharge their electric cars using a pre-paid card which can be ordered by email.

Development of a sustainable transport policy based on the Electric Vehicles as a key tool for combating climate change is a cornerstone of Endesa’s Strategic Sustainability Plan 2008-2012.

This project sees Telefónica utilise its countrywide network of telephone booths to encourage energy efficiency in the transport sector and promote a low carbon economy.

The Chairman of Endesa, Borja Prado, together with the mayor of Madrid, Alberto Ruiz Gallardón, and the Chairman of Telefónica, César Alierta, have today unveiled the first phone booth in Madrid which can also be used for recharging electric vehicles. The booth is located at Ronda de la Comunicación, s/n, Madrid (District C) and will carry the Endesa logo.

Reserved parking spaces will be located next to this and all other booths set up in Metropolitan areas where users will be able to park their Electric Vehicles  (EVs) and recharge at no cost once they have obtained their free "zero emissions" pre-paid card from the Madrid city council.

This pilot scheme is intended to demonstrate the project’s technical viability, as well as its commercial feasibility. During the pilot scheme, which is due to run until the end of the year, recharging will be free-of-charge using a pre-paid card which can be ordered by email at [email protected]. The system will be launched commercially once the pilot scheme has finalised.

Endesa and Telefónica have signed an agreement to develop a technological solution using Telefónica’s phone booths as Electric Car recharging points. The aim is to promote sustainable mobility and enable users to recharge their vehicles on public thoroughfares. This project, which uses pre-paid cards, will also provide information on usage and consumption.

In Spain, the company is involved in rolling out electric mobility projects (MOVELE project) in Madrid and Barcelona, and in the main technological initiatives (Cenit VERDE, DER22@ and REVE-Regulación Eólica con Vehículos Eléctricos projects).

It also recently entered into agreements with leading companies, such as Telefónica, to promote electric mobility. In Europe, Endesa is the only Spanish company involved in the ELVIRE and G4V consortia aimed at developing the necessary technology, solutions and services to enable ongoing interaction between drivers, their power suppliers and the smart grid.

These projects also evaluate the large-scale impact of introducing the EV on the power grid. Endesa was also one of the first companies to join international standardisation and regulation groups for electric mobility equipment, systems and solutions and has recently teamed up with CHAdeMO, the Japanese association that provides fast charge services for EV users and boasts the largest global footprint, to expand the installation of these recharging points worldwide and set recharge standards.

Phone booths as recharging points.

This new service will offer users recharging facilities at phone booths located along main thoroughfares with parking spaces nearby. The phone booths provide service points throughout Spain and, as they are all electrically powered, will not require any additional adaptation.

The booths are usually located on pavements close to the curb, which will make recharging from the reserved parking spaces much easier. Detailed information on the service available will also be displayed.

Telefónica’s commitment to energy efficiency.

Telefónica has a group-wide environmental policy and a Climate Change Office which works to attain greater internal energy efficiency and encourage the use of energy efficient products and services in key economic sectors, such as utilities and transport.

Telefónica is committed to reducing energy consumption by 30% in its global network (kWh/access equivalent) and by 10% at its offices (kWh/number of employees in 2015).
