E.ON officially opens one of the UK?s largest offshore wind power plants

Robin Rigg, the 180MW 60 wind turbines offshore wind farm located in the Solway Firth, began generating power earlier this year and is now celebrating the completion and full operation of the site.

Rt Hon Chris Huhne MP, Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, said: "The completion of Robin Rigg wind energy plant brings the UK one step closer to meeting its renewable energy targets and the team should be very proud of that."

"Offshore wind power is an important part of the UK’s future energy mix but also has the potential to bring a huge amount of investment to the country. I hope and believe that the scale of the project at Robin Rigg points to the great things to come for the industry and Great Britain."

Michael Lewis, European Renewables Managing Director for E.ON, said: "Marking the completion of one of the UK’s largest offshore wind farms is a proud moment for the entire team and it’s fantastic to be able to see the 60 wind turbines turning and generating renewable electricity.

"Working offshore always brings huge challenges, but we’ve relished the opportunity and look forward to our next major project."

Wind farm Robin Rigg has the potential to generate enough electricity to supply the annual needs of 117,000 homes and to displace the emission of 235,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.

The scheme will be E.ON’s third offshore wind farm in the UK after Blyth – the country’s first offshore wind farm – and Scroby Sands. E.ON is also a partner in the London Array, which will be the world’s largest offshore wind farm when built.

E.ON is one of the UK’s leading power and gas companies – generating and distributing electricity, and retailing power and gas – and is part of the E.ON group, one of the world’s largest investor-owned power and gas companies. We employ more than 15,000 people in the UK and more than 88,000 worldwide;

E.ON is one of the leading green generators in the UK, with 20 wind farms located from Cambridgeshire to Kintyre. E.ON own and operate one of the UK’s largest dedicated biomass power stations at Lockerbie. Combined, our renewable portfolio generates enough green energy to power the homes in a city the size of Manchester.

E.ON green development portfolio could power over a million homes and displace the emission of almost two million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year by building new onshore and offshore wind farms, biomass power stations, and marine power schemes.
