Wind power: Spain installed additional 717 MW

In the first six months of this year, Spain has installed additional 727 MW of wind turbines. The latter was publicized by AEE (Spanish Wind Energy Association), which specified that, with the new added wind farm capacity, currently Spain has installed 19,880 MW. It is estimated that the total wind power capacity will grow to 20,150 MW by the end of 2010.

According to data provided by the Spanish Wind Energy Association, electricity generated from wind energy has met 17% of the total electricity demand in the first half of 2010, reaching a 40% peak on May 4th.

Nevertheless, the Spanish Wind Energy Association warns that, considering cuts made to help reduce public spending, the new targets set by the new national energy plan – which includes the next decade – will not be easily achieved.

In order to reach the additional wind farm capacity of 38,000 MW foreseen in the plan, a new legal framework will have to be established, capable of overcoming the uncertainty that has recently characterized this sector.

According to the AEE, it is essential that investors should be allowed to have a long-term prospective and that all future projects should guarantee a reasonable amount of profitability.
