Eaton and Notre Dame Team Up to Power Campus Electric Vehicles

Notre Dame and Eaton kicked off the collaboration last Friday and Saturday as the campus prepared for the October 9 football game against the University of Pittsburgh.

The festivities set in motion the campus initiative to demonstrate the capabilities of operating and charging electric cars. Eaton provided a display of electric vehicle charging stations that will be installed on campus for use in the coming months. Eaton and Mitsubishi Motor Company, Inc. also showcased the iMiEV (Mitsubishi Innovative Electric Vehicle) electric test vehicles, one of which the University will use in various roles in the coming months. During a Friday evening pep rally and on game day, the larger campus and alumni community had a chance to see and learn more about electric vehicles, the developing EV infrastructure and Notre Dame’s commitment to sustainability.

"We are looking forward to demonstrating this new and innovative technology at Notre Dame. The project will help us to further understand the available and growing possibilities around EV technology, as we strive to reduce our energy consumption and carbon footprint on campus," said John F. Affleck-Graves, executive vice president, Notre Dame.

Through the collaboration, Eaton will install and commission with Notre Dame Pow-R-Station Level 2 electric vehicle and DC quick chargers. Campus staff, faculty and students will have access to the chargers during the demonstration test period. The charging stations, as well as an iMiEV, will be used for demonstrations on the university campus.

Through our collaboration with Notre Dame, Eaton is further paving the way for the development of the infrastructure leading to the adoption and expanded use of electric vehicles, said Jerry R. Whitaker, president of Eaton’s Electrical Sector, Americas Region.

The charging stations will be installed and maintained by the University¿s Utilities Department in strategic locations on campus. The University and Eaton have a long history of collaboration on a wide variety of energy efficiency and sustainability related projects, including power system architecture and control strategies.

Notre Dame’s Office of Sustainability was started in 2008 and has made significant progress toward its goals of reducing the university’s carbon footprint and waste as well as increasing education and awareness of the environmental and economic issues related to sustainability. An important aspect of the work of the office is reducing the environmental impact of university transportation. In addition to the partnership with Eaton, the University launched a partnership with the car-sharing service, Zipcar, this fall.
