Iberdrola Renewables, part of the largest provider of wind energy in the world, today announced a power purchase agreement (PPA) with a new customer, the City of Bryan, Texas through its electric utility, Bryan Texas Utilities (BTU).

“Because the price of our fuel does not fluctuate, we provide long-term price certainty from a facility which generates power without air emissions or water consumption,” said Barrett Stambler, Iberdrola Renewables’ vice president. ‘Iberdrola Renewables is delighted to welcome the City of Bryan to our growing list of customers.’

“We will meet a portion of the expected near-term demand growth of the BTU system’s ratepayers with clean, renewable energy at a price competitive with conventional alternatives,” said Dan Wilkerson, BTU’s general manager. “The Peñascal Wind project is favorably located and has already begun operations, proving its ability further diversifying and hedging BTU’s power supply.”

The 202-MW Peñascal 2 Wind Project in Kenedy County, Texas was placed in service in February 2010. Power deliveries to the City of Bryan will begin on January 1, 2011.

Iberdrola Renovables, with operations in 23 countries, is the world’s largest provider of wind power in both installed capacity (with nearly 11,000 MW at the end of 2009) and output (over 21 million MWh). Iberdrola Renewables is the second-largest wind operator in the US with more than 3,800 MW in operation at 41 wind farms.

Since 1909, when Bryan Power Company was created to serve the City of Bryan’s utility needs, Bryan Texas Utilities, now known as BTU, has generated and transmitted reliable and affordable energy to the community. BTU is a consumer-owned electric utility serving customers in Brazos, Burleson and Robertson counties in central Texas.

Currently, BTU generates electricity at its Dansby power plant, located north of Bryan and the Atkins plant near downtown Bryan. BTU is also a partner with the cities of Denton, Garland and Greenville, Texas in the Texas Municipal Power Agency, which owns the Gibbons Creek generating station in Carlos, Texas. BTU prides itself on superior customer service while keeping energy prices low.
