Egypt announces tender for 4 wind energy plants

Electricity Ministry officials have announced an invitation for local and foreign investors to proffer tenders to build four wind power stations in the Suez Gulf area.

The wind farm stations will have a total capacity of 1000 megawatts and the wind turbines project will be developed under a build-own-operate (BOO) arrangement.

Two phases will be involved in the wind power project, with two wind farm plants being built during each stage, Minister of Electricity Hassan Younis said on Wednesday. The initial phase will be implemented in January 2011, and the second in July of the same year.

Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company officials will purchase the power produced for a 20-year period. Pricing for consumers will be determined by the cabinet. The two-phase implementation of the wind energy project is designed to attract the largest number of investors.
