To receive the most prestigious award among 82 global suppliers to GM who were also in presence at the awards, Vice Chairman and CEO of LG Chem, Peter Bahnsuk Kim, flew in to attend the ceremony.
It is believed that LG Chem’s lithium-ion battery has contributed heavily to the successful launch and selling of GM’s first electric vehicle, Volt.
According to GM, the company was also hailed for its innovative technology in developing the advanced battery and the cooperative partnership with one of the world’s largest automakers.
“Our technology and quality in developing lithium-ion battery, of course, its supply capacity has proved once again to be the most advanced in the world,” Kim said. “In addition, LG Chem is determined to build up its partnership with GM to lead the electric vehicle industry,” he added.
General Motors recognized 82 of its best global automotive suppliers Thursday evening with its Supplier of the Year award during the 19th annual awards presentation held at the GM Renaissance Center.
Sixty-three of the winning suppliers have been recognized at least one additional time since the awards began in 1992.
This year’s Corporation of the Year winner is LG Chem, supplier of the battery cells that are packaged into the battery of the Chevrolet Volt electric car with extended-range capability.
"We believe the Supplier of the Year Award is a top honor in the industry," said Bob Socia, GM vice president, Global Purchasing and Supply Chain. "These suppliers are a critical part of our effort to design, build and sell the world’s best vehicles."
The award recognizes the significant contributions of GM’s suppliers in 2010 as part of the company’s global product and performance achievements.
