As a leader in solar energy solutions in Spain, Conergy completed the installation of the largest solar rooftop system on the Canary Islands. The 1.75 kilowatt solar power plant is located on the 46,000 square foot/14,000 square meter roof of the coffee roaster Emicela in Aqüimes on Gran Canary. In a record time of only two months, the Conergy engineers installed more than 7,600 Conergy PowerPlus Modules and more than 9 miles/15 kilometers Conergy SolarFamulus and SunTop III mounting systems. The premium modules will produce 2,600 megawatt hours annually of electricity. A total of 72 Conergy inverters from the IPG series feed the electricity into the local grid. The power plant in the idyllically situated coastal town prevents 1,000 tons of the harmful greenhouse gas CO2 per year.
The investor of the new solar installation is Bankia, a large Spanish banking institution. “We don’t just talk about sustainability, we live it,” say the two brothers D. Emiliano and D. Sergio Arencibia from Emicela. “For generations now, we are connected to our islands here. In our production, we use high-quality natural products and recyclable packaging. Thanks to Conergy we can now also say, that we are using clean, emission-free electricity.” The executive chairman of Bankia, D. Rodrigo Rato adds, “Solar technology plays a vital role in creating a sustainable, environmentally friendly energy mix on the Canary Islands.”
Owing to their positive experience during the planning and installation stages, Bankia and Emicela have already engaged Conergy for a follow-up project. The Hamburg-based company is currently installing a second Conergy system on another rooftop of the coffee roaster with an output of 270 kilowatts. Both the investor and the company benefit from a total of two megawatts worth of Conergy system technology.
