EGP grow in Brazil with three new wind power projects

Enel Green Power, has been awarded with 3 highly efficient wind farm projects located in the Brazilian States of Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco and Bahia.

These wind turbines projects will add 193 MW to Enel Green Power’s 90 MW of wind power projects that were awarded last year and 93 MW of hydro capacity already in operation in Brazil.

Enel Green Power’s successful participation in the 2011 Brazilian New Energy Auction is a significant step forward in the deployment of its growth strategy in Latin America

Enel Green Power has been awarded power supply contracts with three wind farm projects totaling 193 MW of installed capacity in the 2011 Brazilian New Energy Auction. These projects are located in the Northeast of Brazil in the States of Bahia, Pernambuco and Rio Grande do Norte, the latter in consortium with Endesa.

Commercial operations of these wind power projects is expected by 2014. These three wind farms will be able to generate as much as 770 GWh per year, enough to serve as many as 500,000 households in Brazil and are aimed at meeting the growing Brazilian power demand which is estimated to grow at an annual rate of approximately 5%.

The wind energy projects of Enel Green Power have outstanding capacity factors over 45% or approximately 4,000 hours per year in power generation.

Through this auction Enel Green Power has been granted the right to sell defined energy volumes from its wind farms to a pool of regulated distribution companies with 20 years power supply contracts. Additional energy volumes will be sold to the liberalized market through long term pre-established commitments. The estimated total investment for the three wind turbines projects is approximately 330 million euros.

"This is an important step forward in our strategy to develop high quality projects in a fast growing and competitive market environment as the Brazilian one” – commented Francesco Starace, CEO and General Manager of Enel Green Power – “We see excellent conditions for a sustainable and large development of renewables in Brazil and, in this context, EGP will be able to play an important role, making the most of its technologies while leveraging on the strong synergies it has with the Endesa group, operating on the Brazilian power market.”

Brazil ranks amongst the top countries in the world for clean generation mix thanks to over 92,000 MW of renewable generation capacity representing approximately 84% of the country’s overall installed capacity.

Enel Green Power is the Enel Group company devoted to the development and management of power generation from renewable sources at the international level, with a presence in Europe and the Americas. It is among the industry leaders worldwide thanks to its approximately 22 billion KWh generated from a well balanced energy mix inclusive of water, solar power, wind power and geothermal energy sources. This is enough to meet the energy needs of more than 8 million households and avoid the emission of more than 16 million tons of CO2 into the atmosphere.

The company’s installed capacity exceeds 6,100 MW, produced by more than 620 plants in operation around the world, with a generation mix that includes wind energy, solar energy, hydro, geothermal energy and biomass.
