The China Power Investment Corporation (CPIC) recently obtained a 40,000-kilowatt photovoltaic (PV) solar power generator project in the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, as part of the region’s efforts to accelerate the development of renewable energy, according to the Xinjiang Development and Reform Commission.

CPIC’s two PV solar power generation stations in Kumul and Hotan both received 20,000 kilowatt solar power projects, and preliminary work for the projects is currently underway.

The Kumul power station, the biggest PV solar power generation plant in Xinjiang, plans to invest a total of 326 million yuan ($51.48 million) in the projects. The average annual energy output is expected to exceed 30 million kilowatts, said Niu Chunhui, the director of the power station.

One million kilowatts of solar power capacity is expected to be created by 2015. Xinjiang has a prominent advantage with its solar energy resources as it receives a total of 3,500 hours of annual sunshine, and has a global solar radiation area of 5.5 million to 6 million kilojoules per square meter, ranking only second to Tibet.
