Tata Steel to Supply Profiled Steel to Siemens Wind Power

Tata Steel will supply the steel plates between April and September 2012. The steel will be used for the construction of 150 onshore wind turbines. Tata Steel has already supplied 6,000 tonnes of steel plate to Siemens Wind Power for wind power hubs in Europe and UK. This contract establishes Tata Steel as the key supplier for Siemens Wind Power.

The steel plates will be manufactured at the Scunthorpe and Dalzell plants of Tata Steel after which they will be cut and profiled at Tata Steel’s exclusive wind tower hub in Scunthorpe. The steel plates will then be delivered to a fabricator where the round sections of the steel plate will be formed and welded for the turbine tower.

The wind tower hub owned by Tata Steel was set up in 2010 for the distribution and processing of steel plates to wind turbine tower manufacturers. The wind tower hub has an annual capacity of 200,000 tonnes and can reduce the processing time for customers. Tata Steel expects to gain access to other major opportunities for supply of hollow sections and hot rolled coil through the arrangement with Siemens Wind Power.
