Beijing Asks Buildings to Tap Solar Power

A regulation issued by the Municipal Commission of Housing and Urban-Rural Development on Saturday also stipulated new residential and public buildings should prioritize industrial and waste thermal power to heat water for non-drinking purposes.

The solar energy regulation, which covers urban residential buildings, hotels, schools, hospitals, bath houses and swimming pools, will take effect on March 1.

The government also encourages existing buildings to install the solar thermal heating systems during renovations. Renovations must be approved by at least two thirds of the proprietors of a building before they can proceed.
