As wind/PV hybrid system in China’s large wind power generators (with the installed capacity of a single system above 1 MW), on-grid solar PV and solar thermal power generation is still at an early stage, its mainstream application is confined to small and medium-sized wind power generators (with the installed capacity of a single system at or below 100 KW) and off-grid utilization of solar PV power, which will be the subject of this survey.
Driven by the strong market demand and many other factors, the size of China’s wind/PV hybrid system market has kept a stable and relatively fast growth in recent years.
On one hand, wind/PV hybrid system perfectly addresses the seasonal and weather restrictions on the sole use of either wind or solar power. It also improves the resource utilization efficiency and the reliability of the application systems, which gives it a strong edge in market competition. Wind/PV hybrid system has been widely used in traditional off-grid solar PV generation as well as small and medium-sized wind power generation for household use in remote areas, island power supply, oil well power supply, street lighting, landscape lighting, microwave relay station power supply, railway and highway signaling system, lighthouse and navigation mark lamp power supply, as well as meteorological station, seismic station, hydrological observation system and communications system uses.
On the other hand, with a decline in the export proportion in 2010 and 2011, more small and medium-sized wind generators are being applied in the domestic market in the fields including wind/PV hybrid system. According to statistics of the Wind Power Equipment Branch of China Association of Agricultural Machinery Manufacturers (CAAMM), the export of small and medium-sized wind generators accounted for 45-55% of the total sales volume from 2008 to 2009. However, the proportion from 2010 to 2011 registered 35% only.
Last but not least, the application of wind/PV hybrid system has extended into sectors such as municipal construction, urban public security monitoring, forest fire monitoring and electric vehicle charging and replacement stations. In addition, the improving diversity and performance of related application products are also contributed to the rapid growth of its market size.
From 2009 to 2011, the growth rate of the sales revenue of the wind/PV hybrid system application products in China stayed between 29% and 35%. In 2011, the sales revenue reached RMB 2.57 billion approximately, rising 34.18% year-on-year.
According to the data by the Wind Power Equipment Branch of CAAMM, the sales revenue of wind/PV hybrid system products was around RMB 4.28 billion in 2011, accounting for between 60% and 67% of the total of the application market in power supply, lighting and monitoring systems.
