Vestas win UK wind energy contract

The order has been placed by Keadby Wind Farm Ltd; which is a company wholly owned by SSE. SSE is a leading electricity and gas company, operating in the UK and Ireland.

They are the UK’s second largest generation business, with a total capacity of just over 11,300 MW.

Vestas has received an order for 68 MW consisting of 34 units of the V90-2.0 MW turbine for the Keadby Wind Farm project near Scunthorpe in Lincolnshire, UK.

Keadby Wind Farm is due to be the largest onshore wind power plant in England. Once constructed, Keadby Wind Farm will have an installed capacity of 68 MW and it will provide clean, green energy and power the equivalent of between 38,000 and 47,000 UK homes.

The contract includes delivery, installation and commissioning of the wind turbines, a VestasOnline® Business SCADA solution, as well as a five year service agreement.

Installation of the first turbines is expected to start during the summer of 2013 and the project is due to be completed by summer 2014.

Klaus Steen Mortensen, President, Vestas Northern Europe said: “We are delighted to have been awarded this landmark contract from one of our key customers SSE. Vestas is focused on developing new projects in the UK and this wind farm is a great example of our continued commitment to both SSE and wind in the UK. The V90-2.0 MW builds on proven technology to ensure component reliability and durability, reducing the risk of downtime and helping ensure stability of the customers’ investment.”

Dave Sutton, Keadby Wind Farm Lead Project Manager said: “Keadby will be the largest onshore wind farm in England when it is completed, with a total capacity of 68 MW of clean electricity, and we’re looking forward to working with Vestas, who have a great reputation in the turbine manufacturing industry.”
