OPEC finances wind farm in Yemen

An agreement was signed between Yemen and the OPEC Fund for International Development for the financing and generation of electricity in Al-Mukha using wind energy.

The cost of the wind power project is $20 million, and the agreement was signed by the Yemeni Minister of Planning and International Cooperation Mohammed Al-Sadi and the General Manager of OPEC’s Fund for International Development Sulaiman Jasir Al-Harbash.

After the signing of the agreement, Al-Sadi said the use of wind power to generate electricity for Al-Mukha represented one of the fastest and best possible solutions the Yemeni government could use to overcome continuous shortages in electricity, as well as to meet ever-increasing demands for power.

Speaking to the SABA News Agency, Al-Sadi said his ministry was attempting to get as much benefit from the fund as possible en route to achieving aims for sustainable development.

For his part, Al-Harbash said that OPEC approval and ensuing signatures followed announcements at the Friends of Yemen Donor Conference to the effect that the OPEC fund would continue to provide as much support as possible to Yemen.
