Jordan and Masdar agreement confirms belief in Concentrated Solar Power

Jordan has long been mooted as a future concentrated solar power stronghold – and a recent deal with Abu Dhabi based renewable energy company Masdar has verified their confidence in the technology.

On 17 January 2013 it was announced on the CSP Today Global Tracker that Masdar signed an agreement with Jordan to secure the company’s involvement in upcoming renewable energy projects. The agreement will create a public-private partnership that will enable Jordan to speak directly with Masdar, making use of Masdar’s expertise when assessing the viability of domestic projects.

Announcements like this confirm that Jordan is serious about developing CSP, in order to meet their target of 10% renewable generation by 2020.

Geographically, the Ma’an Development Area in the south of Jordan is key to CSP. In a recent interview with CSP Today, South Company for Construction and Development (the development agency for the south of Jordan) commented that “the Ma’an Development Area is ideal for solar; it is flat, making for easier construction and is well connected to roads, so making the logistics much easier. It is now up to the developers to submit competitive proposals and make this happen.”

At MENASOL 2013 (14-15 May, Dubai), Dr. Maher Madadah, CEO of Ma’an Development Area will be joined by Ala’a Khatib, Head of License and Monitoring (Generation & Transmission) at the Electricity Regulatory Commission of Jordan. Together the delegation will discuss the role CSP will play in the Jordan’s energy mix, with a focus on the project development opportunities that will soon be open.
