Wind power in Uruguay: Funding for UTE’s biggest wind farm with Nordex wind turbines

Uruguay’s biggest wind farm, to be located in the north-central province of Tacuarembo, will be built at a total investment cost of $321 million, 70 percent of which will come from German bank loans and the rest from a newly created trust.

The Pampa Wind Farm is to be built in 16 months and will consist of 59 2.4 MW Nordex wind turbines, bringing the facility’s total installed capacity to 141.6 MW, the Uruguayan president’s office said Friday.

Also Friday, the UTE state-owned electric utility unveiled the Pampa Financial Trust, a structure created for the wind farm’s development that will cover the remaining 30 percent of the cost through the sale of participation certificates.

The construction phase of the project can begin because it has already received the necessary environmental permits, the chairman of UTE’s board, Gonzalo Casaravilla, said.
