Assessment of Energy Storage Systems Integrators

A new Leaderboard Report from Navigant Research examines the strategy and execution of 12 leading energy storage systems integrators (ESSIs), including vendor profiles, ratings, and rankings, with the goal of providing industry participants an objective assessment of these companies’ relative strengths and weaknesses in the market.

While ESSI players were few and far between just a few years ago, today, a variety of new entrants are populating the market. Battery prices have responded to cost pressures, compelling ESSI providers to deliver more consistent pricing, and the scaling of the industry overall is expected to rely on these vendors and their approach to the market.

According to a new Leaderboard report from Navigant Research, AES Energy Storage, NEC Energy Solutions, and Renewable Energy Systems (RES) Americas lead the ESSI market in terms of strategy and execution.

“Key pieces of the value chain, such as inverters and installation, are bottlenecks that ESSI vendors must find creative solutions to in order to scale their business and continue to offer competitive rates,” says Anissa Dehamna, principal research analyst with Navigant Research. “Vendors that have strategies in place to address these solutions will be well-positioned to scale their businesses over the long term.”

Leading ESSI vendors AES Energy Storage, NEC Energy Solutions, and RES Americas have portfolios of successful projects, demonstrating disposition and their ability to adapt offers to the demand seen in the market, according to the report. These characteristics, along with the pursuit of scalable business models, are particularly important in the ESSI space, as some firms have failed due to poor management or business strategy—even with a core technology that thoroughly demonstrated added value.
