Wind energy in Poland: Acciona wind turbines for a new wind farm

ACCIONA Energía has put its third wind farm in Poland into service, a 30 megawatt (MW) facility that takes the company’s total owned capacity in the country to 101 MW.

ACCIONA carried out the construction of the wind farm in 11 months, supplied the wind turbines and will undertake its operation and maintenance.

Located in western Poland in the localities of Krobia and Poniec (Wielkopolskie province), Poniec II will produce 82 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity every year. This is equivalent to the consumption of 40,000 Polish households and will avoid the emission of around 79,000 metric tons of CO2 to the atmosphere from conventional coal-fired power stations.

The new wind farm has ten AW116/3000 turbines of 3 MW capacity each, with a rotor diameter of 116 meters. The turbines are mounted on 120-meter-high concrete towers, a technology that has already been successful tested in the nearby Krobia I wind farm, with which it shares a substation and a grid connection line.

“We are very pleased to increase our presence in the wind power sector in Poland, a country where we plan to drive new projects”, declared ACCIONA Energía CEO Rafael Mateo recently.

The new wind farm is owned by ACCIONA Energía Internacional (AEI), a company in which ACCIONA Energía (66.6%) and KKR (33.3%) hold a stake.

This company is also the owner of the other two wind farms installed by ACCIONA in Poland: Golice (38 MW) in Lubuskie province, operational since 2011, and the previously-mentioned Krobia I (33 MW), which entered service in 2013.
