Wind power and solar photovoltaic (PV) overtake fossil fuels in EU electricity production for the first time

Data reveals that in the first six months of 2024, renewables overtook fossil fuels in EU electricity production.

The European Commission announced that for the first time, wind and solar PV sources have overtaken fossil fuels in electricity generation in the European Union. According to published data, in the first half of 2024, more than half of EU electricity was generated from renewable sources, overtaking fossil fuels. The State of the Energy Union report reveals that wind power is now the second largest source of electricity in the EU, behind nuclear power, and that solar photovoltaics (PV) has set a new record with 56 GW installed in 2023.

EU Energy Commissioner Kadri Simson highlighted that after two record years for renewable energy installations, the sector has overtaken fossil fuels in the electricity mix for the first time. She also stressed that electricity demand has fallen, but efforts on energy efficiency need to be stepped up to meet the target of an 11.7% reduction in energy consumption by 2030.
