South Africa’s total photovoltaic (PV) capacity grows 11.9% in 2024, reaching 9 GW

The South African Photovoltaic Industry Association (SAPVIA) has summed up 2024’s growth in the solar industry. Marked by gradual growth and notable achievements, this year has laid the groundwork for a brighter, greener future, Pretoria News reports.

The country’s total solar PV capacity rose to 8.97 GW, an 11.9 percent increase over 2023.

“With almost 500 MW of utility-scale projects under construction and 375 MW scheduled to come online by 2025, the future of solar energy in South Africa looks incredibly promising,” said Rethabile Melamu, CEO of SAPVIA.

Looking ahead, SAPVIA foresees significant changes in the energy storage sector, as well as growing interest in solar-plus-storage systems, Melamu says.
