India to reach 97.86 GW of photovoltaic (PV) and 48.16 GW of wind power in 2024

India’s renewable energy sector has made remarkable progress, the Union Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) has reported. Between December 2023 and December 2024, the total installed renewable energy capacity reached 209.44 GW, reflecting a growth of 15.84% compared to 180.80 GW in December 2023. This achievement underlines India’s commitment to its clean energy goals and aligns with the “Panchamrit” vision outlined by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Solar photovoltaics (PV) led the increase with 24.54 GW, representing a 33.47% increase in its cumulative capacity, from 73.32 GW in 2023 to 97.86 GW in 2024. Wind power also contributed to this growth, with 3.42 GW added during the year, increasing its total capacity to 48.16 GW, an increase of 7.64% compared to 2023.

The year 2024 saw record capacity additions in the renewable energy sector, with a total of 28.64 GW installed. This represents a substantial increase of 119.46% compared to the 13.05 GW added in 2023. Solar and wind were the main contributors to this growth, demonstrating significant year-on-year expansions.
Other renewable energy sources also showed progress. Bioenergy installed capacity grew by 4.70%, reaching 11.35 GW in 2024, up from 10.84 GW in 2023. Small-scale hydropower saw a modest increase of 2.20%, with its capacity increasing from 4.99 GW in 2023 to 5.10 GW in 2024.

Under the leadership of Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, MNRE has implemented several initiatives to support India’s target of 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030. These efforts underscore the country’s dedication to meeting its climate commitments while ensuring energy security.

India’s progress in the renewable energy sector reflects a robust policy framework and consistent efforts by the government to promote clean energy technologies. The growth achieved in 2024 sets a solid foundation for continued progress in the years to come.
