NextEra Energy will be allowed to build a large wind energy plant in Arizona

A Florida-based company will be allowed to build a large wind farm on state and private lands 13 miles north of Williams, Coconino County Supervisors narrowly decided Tuesday night. If built, it would be the first large wind power facility in Coconino County.

The 11 p.m. vote was 3-2, and came after two evenings of presentations by developers, and from nearby residents opposed to the project for its possible impacts on their views, peace and quiet and property values.

NextEra Energy plans to begin construction this summer if it receives clearance from state agencies to add 62 wind turbines, measuring 405 feet tall.

The company has an agreement to sell the power to Arizona Public Service, and won a county permit to operate the turbines through 2040. NextEra Energy is based in Juno Beach, Fla., and is the parent of Florida Power & Light Co.
