Wind power surge provides nearly 10 million Taiwan households with electricity

Taiwan Power Company (Taipower) said Friday (Oct. 11) wind power output exceeded 2 GW this week, powering nearly 10 million homes.

According to a press release, Taipower said wind power output exceeded 2 GW on Monday (Oct. 7) and maintained this level throughout Tuesday (Oct. 8). Wind power also performed well on National Day (Oct. 10), generating over 48 million kWh of green power in a single day.

Taipower explained that wind power generation is effective during the fall and winter seasons, which can reduce the load on coal units and allow pumped storage units to store electricity during the day.

“As renewable energy generation increases, the output from coal and gas units can be reduced, allowing more flexibility for the maintenance schedules of these units,” it said.

To date, 372 offshore wind turbines have been completed, per UDN. Taipower said it will continue to promote the integration of wind farms into the grid.
