Forty Mile wind farm powers up clean electricity for Alberta

  • Its 49 Nordex wind turbines will have a total generating capacity of 280 MW, making it one of Canada’s ten largest wind farms and the largest installation of its kind that ACCIONA Energia has built to date in North America.

ACCIONA Energía, a world leader in renewable energy generation, announced today that its new Forty Mile Wind Farm in southern Alberta has started to send renewable electricity to the province’s power grid. The project, which remains on track for completion in the first quarter of 2025, will generate enough clean energy to power more than 85,000 homes.

The project is located about 50 kilometres southwest of Medicine Hat, Alberta. Its 49 Nordex wind turbines will have a total generating capacity of 280 MW, making it one of Canada’s ten largest wind farms and the largest installation of its kind that ACCIONA Energia has built to date in North America.

Today’s announcement marks the powering up of the first nine turbines to be completed and connected to Alberta’s provincially-operated electricity grid. As is common with wind projects of this size, the remaining units will be activated gradually as they are constructed and commissioned over the coming months.

The Forty Mile Wind Farm is ACCIONA Energía’s fifth wind farm in Canada and, once complete, will bring the company’s total installed capacity in North America to more than 3.0 GWs.

The project is creating about 250 jobs during construction and up to 25 permanent jobs once fully operational.

In addition to generating electricity, the Forty Mile facility will inject new tax revenues back into the local economy for decades to come. Finally, ACCIONA Energia provides direct financial support to local non-profit organizations providing services to the communities close to the project. Those include: the Forty Mile Family & Community Support Services; the Medicine Hat Women’s Shelter Society; and the Root Cellar Food & Wellness Hub.
