Latin America Could Ad 160 GW Of Wind Power

Latin America could add as much as 160 gigawatts of new wind energy capacity over the next decade, according to data compiled by the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC).

The continent, until recently, lagged behind in deploying wind turbines and green power generation, largely depending on hydro assets for carbon-free electricity generation.

Last year the continent added a relatively modest 700 megawatts of wind capacity, including Brazil, which added 326 megawatts of new wind capacity. In Mexico 316 megawatts came online, including the 250-megawatt Eureus wind farm in southern Mexico.

Construction over the next decade is expected to significantly ramp up in Brazil, which by 2013 could come online with 4,000 megawatts of new capacity.

Globally, over the next ten years, GWEC estimates Europe and North America to add 300 gigawatts of wind power capacity. In China installed capacity could peak at 250 gigawatts.
