Key players in the Brazilian wind energy market

Historically, only one wind turbines manufacturer, Wobben Windpower, a subsidiary of German company Enercon, was present in the Brazilian wind farm market, with two manufacturing plants. More recently other suppliers began to enter the market included the Argentinean company Impsa, as well as Suzlon and Vestas, which have both sold wind turbines to PROINFA wind farm projects.

More new wind energy market entrants that sold wind turbines in the 2009 and 2010 auctions include Alstom, Gamesa, GE Wind and Siemens. These foreign suppliers have now become eligible for BNDES financing, based on their commitment to manufacture wind turbines in Brazil within a short time frame.

The initial goal is to reach a local content share of 60%. In order to achieve this, both GE and Alstom Wind are currently building wind turbines factories in Brazil, while Gamesa and Suzlon have announced local manufacturing plants.

Siemens already has a large manufacturing base in Brazil which will allow the company to produce and assemble wind turbines. Brazil is well positioned to supply the wider Latin American wind energy market as well as the market in the United States, either with completed wind turbines or with partly assembled parts.
