Sony will introduce a storage battery for commercial users

The 2.4kwh lithium ion battery can power a personal computer for roughly 20 hours. It plugs into conventional electrical outlets and reaches a 95% charge in as little as two hours. Using a new material developed by the electronics giant, the battery lasts more than 10 years.

In an outage, the battery could serve as an emergency power source for PCs and servers at research facilities or refrigeration units at restaurants. It can also be charged at night and used in the day to alleviate the strain on the grid during peak-demand periods.

The battery has six power outlets and weighs about 90kg. Sony is targeting sales of 300 units for the current fiscal year. It is expected to sell for about 2 million yen.
