India now ranks fifth in wind energy

Farooq Abdullah, minister for new and renewable energy, in his inaugural address at the international conference on renewable energy resources at Amrita University, advised not to burn fossil fuels as it was detrimental to the environment.

The world has woken up to the global warming, remarked Abdullah. "Glaciers are rapidly melting and we have realized that we will run out of fuel shortly, making it urgent for us to conceive alternate ways to get renewable energy," he added.

"India now ranks fifth in wind energy. We generate 17,000 MW power from wind turbines. By 2013, we target 1300 MW of solar power under Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission and to make this possible we have to co-operate with other countries that have already reached their target," he said.

"There are tremendous things that we can do in our nation. All we have to do is join hands and work together for the development of the nation," he said.

Dr RK Pachauri, chancellor, The Energy and Resources Institute ( TERI), said, "If we work together India can reach heights and top the list in producing energy from renewable sources. We should be aware of the benefits of using renewable energy. It’s in our hands to build an efficient nation for a healthy and eco-friendly environment for future generations."

Swami Ramakrishna Puri, treasurer of Mata Amritanandamayi Math, Brahmachari Abhayamrita Chaitanya, pro-chancellor Amrita University and vice chancellor of Amrita University P Venkat Rangan also took part in the conference.
