By 2020, the share of renewable energy sources of total consumption in Azerbaijan will increase to 9.7 per cent compared to the current 2.3 per cent, head of the Azerbaijani State Agency on alternative and renewable energy under the Energy and Industry Ministry of Azerbaijan, Jamil Melikov said on Wednesday at a workshop on cooperation between Azerbaijan and Europe in the sphere of wind energy on Wednesday.

"An increase in the share of renewable energy in total consumption is planned at by establishing new power generation capacities in general running at 2500 megawatts by 2020," Melikov said.

He said the share of renewable energy by 2020 in the country in total production is planned to increase up to 20 per cent from the current 10 per cent. Some 9.8 per cent of them in 2011 accounted for hydropower plants, and the rest on the other types.

According to forecasts, by 2015 the share of wind energy in the total volume of consumption of the alternative energy sources will hit 50 per cent and by 2020 it is expected to decrease to 32 per cent. "This is due to forecast growth in the consumption of solar energy," Melikov said.
