Wind energy in Brazil: Iberdrola and Neoenerg

These three wind farms are equipped with G90 wind turbines supplied by Gamesa and have been built by IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA.

IBERDROLA, global leader in wind power, and the Brazilian holding company Neoenergia, in which the Company holds a 39% stake, have constructed the Mel II, Caetité II and Caetité III wind farms in Brazil, with a combined capacity of 80 MW.

The three facilities are equipped with Gamesa technology, a benchmark company that IBERDROLA uses for its renewable energy projects around the world. Gamesa built the equipment in the municipality of Camaçarí, in the state of Bahía. IBERDROLA INGENIERÍA has been the responsible for the entire project of construction of these three wind farms.

Mel II, in the state of Rio Grande Do Norte, has a 20 MW capacity and is now fully operational. The facility employs 10 Gamesa G90 wind turbines, each measuring 78 metres in height and with a nominal capacity of 2 MW.

The Caetité II and Caetité III facilities in the state of Bahía each have a capacity of 30 MW and have just been successfully installed. Each wind farm has 15 Gamesa G90 wind turbines.

IBERDROLA, in consortium with Neoenergia, has 10 wind farms under development in Brazil and which will ultimately have a combined capacity of 288 MW, representing the Company’s largest onshore wind power project.

This encompasses the Calango wind power complex, consisting of five wind farms with a combined capacity of 150 MW, the Caetité (90 MW) complex, consisting of three 30-MW wind farms, as well as the Mel II (20 MW) and Arizona I (28 MW) wind farms.

The capacity of these 10 wind power infrastructures will enable the Company to generate enough energy to supply some 450,000 Brazilian households, while avoiding the emission of 510,000 tonnes of CO2 each year.

The construction of these wind farms is creating around 200 jobs and, once they have been commissioned, another 20 workers will be hired for operation and maintenance.

All 10 wind power projects in Brazil are being financed through the National Bank of Economic and Social Development (BNDES) and the Bank of Brazil, made possible by the signing of these loans totalling €300 million.

IBERDROLA and Neoenergia are launching these facilities having won the August 2010 A-3 tender to promote renewable energy, organised by the National Electricity Agency (Aneel) under the Brazilian Government’s Growth Acceleration Programme.

IBERDROLA is the global leader within the sector of renewable energy in terms of both installed capacity, with over 14,000 MW at the end of 2012, and electricity output, with nearly 31.8 billion kilowatt hours generated last year.
