Gamesa reinforces its presence in Brazil with a 150 MW supply contract

Under the contract, the company will fit 75 G97-2.0 MW wind turbines at five wind farms being built by Consórcio Morrinhos and will maintain them for 15 years.

Gamesa, a global technology leader in wind energy, has achieved another milestone in its bid to become one of the leading turbine makers in Brazil. The company has signed an agreement with Consórcio Morrinhos to supply 150 MW of capacity in Brazil. This conglomerate is made up of Atlantic Energias Renováveis S.A. and Casa dos Ventos, one of Brazil’s biggest wind energy developers.

The scope of the agreement includes the supply, installation and commissioning of 75 Gamesa G97 2.0 MW wind turbines in five 30 MW wind farms, which Consórcio Morrinhos is planning to build in the town of Campo Formoso in Bahia state. Gamesa expects to start installing the wind turbines in the second half of 2014 and finish by the first half of 2015. Under the agreement, Gamesa will also handle operations and maintenance at all five wind farms for a period of 15 years.

The wind farms’ construction will generate 870 direct and indirect jobs. Once operational, they will produce around 727,000 MWh of electricity a year, equivalent to the annual power requirement of 297,000 Brazilian households, and prevent the emission of over 215,000 tonnes of carbon a year.

“This contract reinforces Gamesa’s strategic commitment to Brazil, one of our priority growth markets for the near and medium term”, according to Edgard Corrochano, Gamesa Regional Director for the Southern Cone Region. “Gamesa’s consolidation as one of the leading turbine makers in Brazil is underpinned by a solid business strategy that combines our global technological prowess with local know-how and our commitment to community development by creating jobs and generating wealth by purchasing and allying with local suppliers”.

Marcelo Marder, Managing Director of Atlantic Renovaveis do Brasil S.A., said that “this project consolidates our company as one of the country’s leading energy players and marks the start of a firm and committed long-term relationship with Gamesa. We believe in Gamesa’s technology and its ability to deliver, thanks to its local presence”.

Contracts to supply 1,000 MW in Brazil

Since Gamesa began on-the-ground production in Brazil almost two years ago, it has rapidly consolidated its position in the Latin American giant, securing contracts encompassing the supply of 936 MW of capacity in the country’s top three wind-rich regions: Ceará, Bahía and Río Grande do Sul. At year-end 2012, Gamesa had already installed 96 MW of capacity in Brazil.

Besides Brazil, Gamesa is present in other Latin American nations, including Mexico, Honduras, Argentine and Costa Rica, where it has installed almost 1,000 MW of turbines. Latin America is one of the company’s core markets: in 2012, the region accounted for 47% of the order intake and 32% of total revenue.
