Ecotality develops electric vehicles recharging software

The software was created by the Scottsdale company’s subsidiary, Electric Transportation Engineering Corp. in Phoenix. It is designed to accompany the thousands of chargers Ecotality and eTec will distribute as part of a nearly $100 million federal grant to spur the adoption of electric vehicles.

Officials said the software is designed to allow users to program electric car charging for the least expensive “off-peak” hours, as well as to notify owners when a charge is complete. A GPS system will provide data on open charging stations.

“This is an innovative move forward for Ecotality as we continue to cement our role as the leading EV solutions provider,” said company President and CEO Jonathan Read. “Our software platform will allow EV drivers to log in via a Web site to remotely check the charge status of an EV at any Ecotality charge station, initiate and control the vehicle charging, and even help drivers locate the nearest charging stations.”

Ecotality is rolling out the charging stations in cities in five states, including Phoenix and Tucson. The company is working with Nissan on the partnership as the Japanese automaker is rolling out its Leaf electric vehicle this fall.
