Nordex interested in Pakistan’s wind energy

A delegation of Nordex visited Alternative Energy Development Board (AEDB) Headquarters to discuss investment opportunities in the Alternative/ Renewable Energy (ARE) Sector in Pakistan.

Mr. Arif Alauddin, Chief Executive Officer AEDB in a briefing to the delegation apprised them of the immense potential in the ARE Sector in Pakistan. He said that available ARE potential, the current energy shortages in the country and lucrative incentives that the Government of Pakistan offers, provide unique opportunities for investment in Pakistan.

He said that in the wind power sector alone, Pakistan possesses an estimated potential of generating 350,000 MW of electricity. Responding to questions relating to the national ARE policy, Mr. Alauddin said that the Short Term Policy, 2006 encompasses only three technologies i.e. wind farm, solar power and small hydro.

However, in the Mid Term Policy (MTP), which is expected to be approved by next month, all the remaining technologies have been included. He briefed the delegation of the salient feature of the proposed MTP.

The delegation expressed keen interest in making direct investment in Pakistan, and exchanged views in setting up a facility for manufacturing in Pakistan. Mr. Arif Alauddin assured the delegation of all out support from AEDB and other government agencies.

It may be mentioned that they have already manufacturing towers of the wind turbines in Pakistan in collaboration with a Pakistani company. The CEO, AEDB also discussed the prospective of supplying wind turbines to other RSIPPS in Pakistan by Nordex.

He informed the team that a number of projects in wind power sector are at various stages of development, and some of which are delayed only due to availability of quality wind turbines in the world.

The delegation, led by Mr. Carsten Pedersen, one of the founding members of Nordex, is visiting Pakistan to sign the wind turbine supply deal with Fauji Fertilizer Company (FFC) for their 50 MW Wind farm. Nordex will supply 33 state-of-the-art Nordex S77-1.5 MW wind turbines for this wind farm. Through this deal, Nordex is entering into a new developing wind energy market of Pakistan.

The presence of Nordex in Pakistan will benefit both Nordex and wind IPPs to develop new ventures/deals for bringing wind energy in Pakistan.

At the beginning of 2010, the number of Nordex wind turbines installed around the world since 1985 passed the 4,000 mark. Of the globally installed nominal wind power output of 5.67 GW, some 52% is accounted for by the multi-megawatt class, which was launched in 2000.
