Iberdrola and BMW launch corporate electric car sharing service

Iberdrola and BMW have launched the first corporate electric car sharing service in Spain, based on the i3 model by the German manufacturer.

This 100% electric vehicle will be used at the electric utility’s centres in Madrid, Bilbao, Barcelona and Valencia.

Alphabet, the contract hire , fleet management and corporate mobility company belonging to the BMW group, will be in charge of providing the cars and of designing and implementing the solution for managing this service, which will initially run for four years, according to the recently signed agreement.

This car-sharing service will give almost 350 members of staff at Iberdrola access to environmentally-friendly cars when doing retail business in the four cities mentioned above. This will improve their travel efficiency, by saving on costs and reducing CO2 emissions into the atmosphere by up to 4.68 tonnes.

The result of the MoU signed by the two institutions last year to develop areas of common interest in the field of electric mobility, this initiative follows BMW’s commitment to offer Iberdrola’s Green Energy product to customers buying electric vehicles

The combination of Iberdrola’s Green Energy and BMW’s electric vehicles is the best comprehensive solution for a form of mobility that is 100% emissions free, as it guarantees that no emissions are generated when travelling in these vehicles or in producing the electricity used to run them.  This enables the German brand to close the sustainable loop started in the design and production of the i3 and i8 models.

In 2010, Iberdrola launched a business area for developing and marketing charging solutions for electric vehicles.  Since then, the company has taken part in several electric mobility projects in Spain and in Europe, as well as acting as a Charge Manager, according to the role created by standing legislation.

On the basis of this work, Iberdrola has developed its own proprietary technology and know-how in providing charging services. This experience has enabled the company to market the Iberdrola ‘Recarga Verde’ product, a comprehensive solution that meets the charging needs of electric vehicles in both the public and private sectors. In particular, the ‘Recarga Verde’ Smart and Basic products are an ideal proposal for households, business fleets and shops and service providers with publicly accessible car parks that wish to offer their customers charging services.

In this regard, Iberdrola has installed a total of 224 charging points for electric vehicles in recent years, of which 19 were set up at the BMW headquarters, the brand’s dealerships and other corporate centres belonging to the manufacturer in Spain.

About the BMW i3

The BMW i3 is a 100% electric car that generates an output of 170 hp and 0g/km in CO2 emissions. Its manufacturing process is driven by sustainable, state-of-the-art methods at the Moses Lake plant. The vehicle frame is made from carbon-fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) and recycled materials are used in the finish.  This guarantees a low overall weight, which combined with its powerful engine and design entirely geared towards electric mobility means that the BMW i3 is capable of a range of up to 190 kilometres on a single charge and of accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 7.2 seconds.  The peak torque is 250 Nm, which is on tap immediately.
