Algeria first wind farm

The first wind ebergy plant in Algeria will be built in 2010 in the province of Adrar, 1543 km south of Algiers, according to Belhamel, the director of National Centre for Renewable Energy (CNDER).

He said Sunday in Bou-Ismail locality in Tipasa: “This wind farm will bring a plus more in terms of training in this promising sector experiencing unprecedented interest in the world.”

He was speaking at the opening of a Mediterranean Seminar on Wind Energy, which he said would provide insights from experts and scientists on these potential investments, the reliability of wind turbines and the profitability of this energy source, which he noted were plentiful in Algeria, clean, profitable and sustainable.

After a decline of several centuries, he noted, wind power “is back with force, especially in countries of northern Europe such as Denmark, Norway and Germany, where this energy source has reached levels of ever developed technology with a view to arriving at the conventional network of electricity at more competitive costs”.

In Algeria, where the first experiment will be launched this year with the plant in Adrar to be funded by Sonelgaz for 30 million euros, the use of wind energy “is ridiculous with 0.7 megawatt (MW) at present”, the president of the seminar, Nachida Kasbadji Merzouk, said.

According to the head of the CNDER wind division, a programme is underway to seek windy sites and a study has just been completed in the region of Bejaia where a site located in Ras El Oued has been selected for the establishment of a wind farm.

The benefit of using wind energy is economic at five to six dinars per kilowatt hour (one USD = about 73 dinars), which is cheaper than solar, not monopolizing soil and is non-polluting energy.

Asked about the objective of this scientific meeting, which involves dozens of experts from Mediterranean countries as well as Canada and research units across the country and students, she told APS that beyond the debate on the contribution of wind energy, its advantages and inconvenient, it was about creating a Mediterranean network of researchers and stakeholders in the wind energy, from industrialists, manufacturers and trainers.

The meeting began Monday with the presentation of papers on the use of wind energy in the world, the global energy balance forecasts for 2030 and renewable energy in the perspective of “human development” and not just sustainable one.

The morning session was concluded with a discussion of the weaknesses of the wind, namely noise, even its impact on the rotation Earth according to some participants.
The meeting is intended as a prelude to a reflection on Algeria strategy on the use of renewable energy proposed by Pofessor Chitour.
