When thinking of clean technologies, energy storage might not be the first thing to come to mind, but with a $17.1 million conditional commitment for a loan guarantee from the Department of Energy AES Energy Storage will develop a battery-based energy storage system to provide a more stable and efficient electrical grid for New York State’s high-voltage transmission network.

Because grid frequency regulation – which is needed to balance power generation and consumption on the grid – is traditionally maintained by burning fossil fuels, grid stabilization often comes with the associated financial and environmental costs.

By developing a 20 megawatt (MW) energy storage system using advanced lithium-ion batteries, the AES project will eliminate the need to burn fossil fuels and provide the same regulation at a lower price.

Having this advanced frequency regulation capability could potentially help reduce carbon emissions from today’s methods by 70 percent and will allow renewable electricity generation to play a larger role in New York’s transmission network – a huge step toward meeting the President’s goal of doubling renewable energy generating capacity by 2012.
