How Wind Power Is Leading America’s Energy Transition

Wind energy is now America’s leading renewable source of electricity generation. 2020 in particular was a banner year for wind power in the US.
With more installed capacity with wind turbines only in the last quarter of 2020 than in all of 2019. Now, the total capacity exceeds 120,000 MW, enough to power some 38 million homes.

Basically, all of that growth was in the onshore wind sector. The developers are also planning more offshore wind projects for the next few years. And they are pioneering advances in the field along the way, such as the development of ever-larger wind turbines, with individual blades larger than football fields.

But for all the promise of wind power, there are some concerns that have persisted over the years, preventing the expansion of onshore and offshore wind turbines. Regulatory and permitting hurdles, concerns about bird kills caused by wind turbines and other environmental impacts, and of course the intermittent nature of renewables pose a challenge.
In the end, wind power is ready to expand no matter what. The question is how fast.
