AREVA Sets Ambitious Global Goals for Concentrating Solar Power Business

Walking among the estimated 1,200 exhibitors at the recent POWER-GEN International trade show in Orlando, Florida, something appeared out of place: Anchoring the renewable energy pavilion was the familiar red-on-yellow logo of AREVA SA (EPA:CEI) (Paris, France), the French nuclear giant.

Didn’t AREVA belong across the exhibit floor, in the nuclear power pavilion? Maybe there was a registration snafu? Or perhaps AREVA was late with its registration, and the only place to accommodate its 400-square-foot booth was in the middle of the renewable energy pavilion?

None of the above. AREVA Solar (Mountain View, California) had a number of employees at its booth eager to discuss the company’s recent venture into non-nuclear, carbon-free electric generation options: concentrated solar energy.

AREVA offers turnkey solutions for the construction of concentrated solar power plants, using Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) technology.

AREVA Solar designs, manufactures and installs solar steam generators for the global power generation and industrial steam needs of its customers in a dependable, market-competitive and environmentally responsible manner.

These solutions are suitable for regions with a high DNI (direct normal irradiance) in Southwestern United States, South Africa, Australia, India, Middle East and North Africa, and parts of Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

AREVA’s core technology, the Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR), uses modular flat reflectors to focus the sun’s heat onto elevated receivers, which consist of a system of tubes through which water flows.

The concentrated sunlight boils the water in the tubes, generating high-pressure superheated steam for direct use in power generation and industrial steam applications without the need for costly heat exchangers.

Solar energy technology is a rapidly expanding field with many innovative solutions that strive to best harness the sun’s energy.

Using CSP, AREVA Solar also leverages its historical expertise in thermal technology, fluid mechanics and heat transfer to best serve utility companies.

Customers can be assured that AREVA’s Solar steam generators meet the highest quality assurance standards. AREVA is proud to be the first solar steam power boiler manufacturer to receive the American Society of Mechanical Engineers’ "S" Stamp Certificate of Authorization – the industry hallmark of acceptance and certification.

With CLFR technology, the compagny is able to produce superheated steam at high temperatures and pressures, up to 750°F (400°C) and 1535 psia (106 bara), which allows us to optimize the needs of power generation and industrial steam users.

AREVA Solar has made the Compact Linear Fresnel Reflector (CLFR) its CSP technology.

Main advantages:

* Design simplicity which leads to lower costs,
* Land efficiency,
* The ability to generate superheated steam at high temperatures and pressures.
* Use of standard commodity materials that allow for local sourcing,
* Environmental benefits.
