Second Wind Pledges to Support President Obama’s Clean Energy Goal

Following President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address last week, Second Wind reaffirmed its commitment to make wind a primary source of clean, renewable energy to help solve the nation’s environmental, economic and security challenges.

President Obama’s proposed Clean Energy Standard sets a goal of generating 80 percent of U.S. electricity from clean energy sources, including wind energy, by 2035. Second Wind is already responding to this challenge in 2011 with aggressive hiring and the formal opening of its new manufacturing plant in Newton, Mass., which will help triple the company’s workforce by 2014. Second Wind is committed to keeping its manufacturing operation in the U.S. and exports wind measurement technology products to China, India, Europe, and Africa. The company’s exports to China alone tripled in 2010 and are expected to continue increasing, with the recent launch of Second Wind’s Triton Sonic Wind Profiler in the Chinese market by Beijing New Energy Technology.

"It’s fulfilling to us, a company that has devoted 30 years of time, dedication and hard work to the development and promotion of clean energy, to have the president and the entire government commit to making clean energy a reality in the U.S.," said Larry Letteney, Second Wind’s CEO. "While companies like ours can work tirelessly to make progress, we need the support, both financially and legislatively, to dramatically increase the level of progress year over year. The 2035 goal and the work being done to get a Clean Energy Standard approved are very gratifying to us and we will work relentlessly to help make this goal happen."

Second Wind’s Triton Sonic Wind Profiler is an advanced remote sensing system that uses sodar (sound detection and ranging) technology to measure wind in the areas that most affect a wind turbine’s performance. By measuring wind speeds at the turbine rotor’s hub height and beyond, Triton reduces uncertainty in annual energy production (AEP) forecasts. Easy to install and capable of autonomous operation, Tritons are being used throughout the wind energy industry, alone or in conjunction with met towers, to streamline the wind farm development process and to improve wind farm operations.

Second Wind develops wind measurement systems that make wind power pay off for consumers, investors and the environment. The company’s technology provides wind farm developers with the bankable wind data they need to plan, finance and operate highly efficient wind generation facilities. Second Wind’s systems are making wind farm development profitable in 50 countries on seven continents. Second Wind’s systems include Triton, the wind industry’s leading remote sensing system; Nomad 2 wind data logger systems; the ProMast 60, a 60-meter meteorological mast; and the SkyServe® Web-based data service.
